BikeSafe day with the Metropolitan Police, London (Maria & Alistair, March 06) Cost: 30 pounds It was a nice day. The cops were very friendly and the day was busy. Starting with few slide presentations. Then about 2 hours morning ride before lunch. 1 or 2 participants matched to 1 policeman. In the morning I was paired with a guy who had better riding skills than me (Maria). In the afternoon ride, the guy was paired with Alistair (who had a lone ride in the morning) while I had my cute policeman all for myself! Funny how everybody in the road behave and respect you when you have a policeman who shadows you! The day ended with discussions and more slides and videos. Is it worth it? Yes It was a very interesting day, and for 30 quids, including lunch and (soft!) drinks, you can't go wrong!

IAM training, Guilford Club (Maria, from Spring 06 to May 2007) Cost : 85 pounds (this incl. joining fee, Exam fee and book on Advanced riding) After the BikeSafe day I decided I needed to improve my riding skills. I joined the Institute of Advanced Motorists (link here). The way it works is that we have an observed ride every 1st Sunday of the month. It lasts for about 2 or 3 hours, depending on availabilities. The club matches 1 or 2 wannabe Advanced Riders with an Observer. Off you go on the bikes, and stop every so and so for advice and assessment. Is it worth it? Definitely yes. Great fun and I have so far improved considerably my riding skills!

Motorcycle Mechanics Practical Skills course at Merton College (Maria sept 05 - May 06) Cost: 185 pounds Note this is an evening course (2 hours per week) It's a fantastic course if a bit slow going. It covers lots of ground and got me working on the college's bikes in no time. The college has fantastic facilities and the tuition team is great. I had a great time doing this course. Is it worth it? Yes no doubt. I have learnt a lot so far and no doubt this will come useful once on the road.
